Figuring Out a Cat Diet

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what a healthy cat diet needs to consist of, but there are a few things that you are going to want to keep in mind and tips that you can use to your advantage if you want to make sure that your pet is getting all the nutrition they need.

One of the most important things to know when it comes to your cat diet is you understanding what to look for in a cat food product. You always want to read the list of ingredients before buying it, even if you think it sounds great from the front packaging.

You want to make sure that there are no fillers in the food, or at least not any that are listed as the first couple of ingredients. Instead you want to ensure that there are whole foods such as rice or corn listed as the first several ingredients, to ensure that you are going to be fulfilling your cat's basic nutritional needs.

Protein is one of the most important issues to think about when you are figuring out a cat diet. As part of their animal-consuming design, cats naturally have high protein requirements, so you will need to make sure that this is a major part of their diet plan. Protein comes from both animal and plant material, and remember that kittens are going to need even more than grown cats.

Minerals are also important and your cat needs minerals, including potassium, magnesium, zinc, calcium, iron, phosphorus, sodium and chloride.

Overweight Cats

If your cat is overweight they are going to need a special cat diet, which will need to consist primarily of diet cat food at least until they lose the weight and then they can go back to the regular diet plan.

If you are having trouble figuring out a proper cat diet plan, one of the best things you can do is speak to a veterinarian. They are experienced with these animals and will be able to take a look at your cat in particular, figure out if they have any health problems and special needs in their diet, and then work together with you to create a specialized diet plan that is going to offer them all the nutrition they need.

You should also do some research on your own time, such as using the Internet to find out more information on the particular breed of cat that you own and the types of foods they should be eating.
