Creating a Proper Feline Diet

Carbohydrates

Cats, unlike most mammals, have no carbohydrate-digesting enzyme called Amylase in their saliva. Cats are natural carnivores so you need to make sure that they are getting enough meat in their diet.

However, cats cannot handle large carbohydrate loads efficiently, as after a meal rich in carbohydrates the feline's blood level of glucose tends to stay higher than normal for long periods of time. Therefore, you need to break the carbs up and only give them small amounts of carbohydrates at a time.

Protein

Protein is also essential for a proper feline kidney diet. You need to feed your cat a diet with high percentages of protein and fat and low percentage of carbohydrates if you expect them to maintain an optimum body weight and a proper state of nutrition.

Treats

We all love to give our cats treats, but this is one of the biggest problems associated with cat obesity. You really need to be careful as to how often you are giving your cat treats and what you are rewarding them for. Keep in mind that most treats for cats have very high levels of carbohydrates and lots of flavor enhancers.
